Tottenham Hotspur 2-2 Sporting Lisbon

Robbie Keane scored one and set up another as Tottenham Hotspur completed their pre-season tour of the United States with a 2-2 draw against Sporting Lisbon at Red Bull Arena in New Jersey.

The Republic of Ireland striker, who was linked with a move away from Spurs this summer after spending the second half of last season on loan at Celtic, opened the scoring with a fine finish in the 23rd minute.

He latched on to Niko Kranjcar’s through-ball and slotted home to give the Spurs manager, Harry Redknapp, food for thought.

The lead lasted for only two minutes, however, before the Chile international Matías Fernández headed home the equaliser.

Jaime Valdes made it 2-1 for the Portuguese side three minutes into the second half by firing past David Button, who had replaced Carlo Cudicini at the break.

The Spurs substitute Jonathan Obika squeezed a shot past the Sporting goalkeeper Rui Patricio in the 70th minute from Keane’s pass to get the north London side back on level terms, and neither team could force a winner in the remaining 20 minutes.

The Croatia midfielder Luka Modric has signed a new six-year contract which ties him to Tottenham Hotspur until 2016.

The 24-year-old arrived from Dynamo Zagreb in the summer of 2008 on a five-year deal and, although the transfer fee was £16.6m, his weekly wage did not put him in Tottenham’s top bracket of earners. He had recently been linked with a lucrative move to Manchester United or Chelsea after his impressive form for the north London club over the past two seasons.

Modric has been described by the Spurs manager, Harry Redknapp, as the squad’s one world-class talent. He was instrumental in Tottenham finishing in fourth place and reaching the Champions League qualifying stages for the first time.

A few days after Spurs achieved that goal, he married his girlfriend, Vanja. The couple are said to be happy in London and are expecting their first child. After committed his long-term future to Tottenham, Modric said he had “no interest in going anywhere else”.
